Introducing One Size Fits None - A Podcast for Leaders
Most management advice sucks. My progression into management happened fast. At 22 I had a team of 4, by 23 I had a team of 70 and at my last company, Yext the team was north of 2,000. I devoured everything I could find on how to manage. Books, blogs, articles, podcasts, whatever I could get my hands on. There were occasionally some good nuggets, but what became overwhelmingly obvious were 2 things.
First, no one had all the answers. Every company is unique and the companies of the future will not be carbon copies of the past.
But the second lesson was more important. If someone was out of the game for a while, they had no idea what they were talking about. Things are moving too quickly, how could they? If you never used Slack,Roam or Zoom, how relevant will your advice be for an organization which lives in these tools?
The same thing is happening right now with AI. OpenAI's ChatGPT, Google's Deep Research, Anthropic's Claude, X's Grok, Microsoft's Copilot, Perplexity , Adobe Firefly, Midjourney, etc.
Every one of those tools has been launched within the past 26 months. A manager who hasn't leveraged ChatGPT or experimented with AI tools has no concept of how to drive productivity. That's why the best insights come from leaders who are in the trenches today, testing, failing, and figuring out how to harness these tools while keeping their teams motivated and productive.
So during a shift like this, how do you get quality management advice? It’s simple.The quality advice comes from people who are currently leading teams.
You want to hear from people who are in the arena. The people who are actively embracing new technologies, fighting their way through the new working paradigms, encountering challenge after challenge and persevering. Those are the people to learn from.
What we’ll be doing on “One Size Fits None” is learning about what works from incredible leaders who are currently in the arena. Founders, executives and leaders from many different walks of life.
Every episode you’ll be hearing from someone leading a company or organization. We’ll get into their unique management style. Don’t expect a playbook with all the answers. Expect a few nuggets to either help you better lead your team, or if you aspire to leadership, to set you on the right path when the time comes.
